When historians take a retrospective look at 2017, one of the things that they will say is that it was the year that women took control of the rules of engagement when it comes to intimate relationships. It seems like every day there is another high profile man getting accused of sexual misconduct. There seems to be no end in sight to the long line of skeletons that are getting dragged out of the closet. Some of these cases actually go back several decades and implicate men as high up on the ladder as the president of the United Sates. But when the dust settles and the smoke clears, the dramatic upheaval that we are witnessing will have a positive impact on the world.
It would be safe to say that men everywhere have come to understand that the culture of silence is over. Gone are the days when complaints about inappropriate sexual advances will go unpunished in the workplace. That’s very good news for all of the mothers, sisters and daughters out there. It would be nice to know that sending your daughter off to work at a big business isn’t a sure fire way to ensure that she becomes a glorified corporate prostitute. Even if the new system is not perfect, we can all agree that it will be better than what came before. But besides the obvious benefits for women, there are men who stand to benefit from the new status quo as well.
Before, all of the pressure of the approach was on men. Having to wear the right outfit at the right time and having to think of clever things to say isn’t always as easy as some of us make it look. With so many legitimately good men second guessing their previous assumptions of what it means to be assertive, women will have to balance out the equation if anything is going to get done. After all, they are human beings with human needs just like us.
For those reasons among others, the collective unconscious will have been affected in a positive way when it’s all said and done. Because empowering women will be better for society in the long run. There will probably be men who disagree with this entire discussion. But let’s just hope that majority rules for the greater good. Even though it’s hard to admit, our male dominated society seems to have led to a culture of rape and unequal pay. Perhaps it’s time to let women have more control over the society that we all live in.
In all fairness, compelling women with positive reinforcement is a much better alternative to coerced domination. What’s more, there isn’t a respectable man on earth that would disagree with that statement. It would be safe to say that giving women more choices will make them confident enough to state their intentions with authority. That is especially true if those intentions are of a sexual nature. They always say that the world would be a better place if women were in charge. We should at least give them the benefit of the doubt and let them try.
